Ziwei Emperor Gourd Locket
Encased in a gourd-shaped locket, the Ziwei Emperor waits within. The closed front carries a Taoist talisman and the Big Dipper constellation in relief against a dark metal field, framed by a full border of pavé-set stones. The reverse offers a contrast: bright gold-tone filigree of scroll and foliage, luminous against the antique frame. Open the hinged chamber, and the emperor emerges — a miniature gold-tone figure with a red stone at the forehead, three pavé-set stones across the chest, and relief detailing across the body. The dark inner walls are lined with circular perforations, lending the interior a sacred, architectural depth. In Taoist tradition, the Ziwei Emperor presides over the pole star — the axis of the celestial sphere, the still point around which all else turns. Worn as a locket, the pendant becomes a wearable sanctuary: what is held within, matters.
